Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to analyze code switching and code mixing realized in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s speech in Peradaban University. The source of data is the utterances of speech delivered by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Peradaban University. In this thesis, the writer analyzes four objects of code switching and code mixing. There are the forms of code switching, the reasons of code switching, the forms of code mixing and the reasons of code mixing. She uses descriptive qualitative to acquire the object of the study. She uses some techniques to collect and analyze the data: listen the speech, write down the script, divide all the data into utterance, choose the utterances which are code switching and code mixing by using segmenting immediate constituent technique (Teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung), identify the utterance in term of word form, phrase form, clause form and sentence form of the forms of code switching and code mixing and the reasons of code switching which are solidarity, topic change, quotation, proverb, interjection and attention withdrawal and the reasons of code mixing which are being emphatic something, ethnic identity marker, language, attitudes, dominance and security, no proper words or expression, talking about particular topic and repetition and the last establish the conclusion. The forms of code switching are 1 phrase form and 1 clause form. The reason of code switching is 2 attention withdrawals. The forms of code mixing are word form covers 40 utterances (23 nouns, 4 verbs, 11 adjectives and 2 interjections), phrase form covers 52 utterances (45 noun phrases, 1 adjective phrase, 4 verb phrases and 4 adverbial phrase), clause form consist of 3 utterances which are 3 independent clauses and 4 utterances of sentence form. The reasons of code mixing are 16 utterances of ethnic identity marker and 4 utterances of repetition.
