Abstract

The aims of this study were to describe “how the souvenir shop keepers at Malioboro Yogyakarta learn English, the difficulties faced by the souvenir shop keepers at Malioboro Yogyakarta, and how the souvenir shop keepers at Malioboro Yogyakarta overcome the difficulties. The source of data was the souvenir shop keepers at Malioboro Yogyakarta. The research design was descriptive qualitative study in which the data were taken from observation, interview,and documentation. The techniques of data analysis were data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Furthermore, the subject of this study was the souvenir shops keepers at Malioboro Yogyakarta who were able to speak English. The writer took 12 participants as the sample.Based on the result of the study, it found out that informal learning was very important. The souvenir shop keepers could study autodidactly and learn by doing. Then the participants could communicate with people from abroad. Informal learning could help the souvenir shop keepers speak English better.
