Abstract

This study was to see the process of improving the students writing ability in narrative text for tenth grade students of SMK Ma’arif NU 2 Bantarkawung through problem based learning. In addition, this study was also focused in carrying out to improve the students writing ability in narrative text through problem based learning for tenth grade students of SMK Ma’arif NU 2 Bantarkawung. The subject of the research was X TKJ class which consists of 29 students. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which the writer works collaboratively with the English teacher. This study was conducted following Kemmis and Taggart with following procedure of action research; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. This study carried out in two circles. Each circle consists of two meetings. The result of this study indicated that there was improvement of the students ability in writing narrative text. Most of the students gradually gained good scores at the end of the circle. The Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) of English lesson was 75.00 (Seventy Five). In the pre-test there were 9 or 42.85% students who passed KKM and the mean score of pre-test was 64.72. The result of post-test 1 in cycle one, there were 15 students or 51.72% who passed the KKM considering their mean score of the test gained 70.34 and the improvement was 8.61%. Next, in post-test 2 in the second cycle showed that there were 23 students or 79.31% who passsed the KKM in which their mean score derived 77.24 and gained 12.75% of improvement. In conclusion, the model of problem based learning can improve students writing ability in narrative text.
