Abstract
This study is aimed to find out the informal strategy used by the pedicab drivers in Malioboro Street, and the implementation of English. The type of this study is a descriptive qualitative which the data are taken from in-depth interview. The techniques of data analysis were data reduction, data display and conclusion. This study found that the pedicab drivers in Malioboro Street commonly used the strategies of informal learning to learn English such as learning independently, memorization and repetition method, and learning everytime and everywhere. Learning independently carried out by the pedicab drivers since they do not educators like teacher, thus they learn English with friends, tour guides and foreign toursts directly. They use memorization and repetition methods to remember and strengthen their memories about English from the result of study together with friends, tour guides and foreign tourists. Meanwhile, the setting of their learning was at everytime and everywhere such as at workplace or home. There are several factors affecting the success of pedicab drivers in acquiring English such as age, educational background, and motivation. Even the pedicab drivers are adult learners, but they prove that adult can be good learners although they are not equipped with qualified educational background and it is not diminish their learning spririt because they have definite learning goals and great study motivation to learn English. The pedicab drivers used English to communicating with foreign tourist and some of them implements their English not only at the workplace but also use at home for joke with their family.
