Abstract
The research was aimed at describing teacher’s strategy in teaching English for deaf students at SLB Manunggal Slawi. Statements of the problem covered the strategy used by the teacher in teaching English for deaf students at SLB Manunggal Slawi and how the teacher applied the strategy. Qualitative approach was used in this research. Techniques of data collection used are observation, interview, and documentation (image). To analyse the data obtained, the writer used data collection technique, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The sources of data were English teacher of SLB Manunggal Slawi, the headmaster of SLB Manunggal, and the deaf students of SLB Manunggal Slawi. The result of this study showed the teacher emphasized on conducting effective lesson by repeating the material and checking students’ understanding periodically, individualizing instructional practices in measure each student’s ability and students’ sitting position as the classroom accommodation as her strategy for teaching deaf students. The use two methods of Total Physical Response, Grammar Translation Method as the English language development strategies in teaching English for deaf students combined with oral speech and sign language used, SIBI. The teacher used those strategies to aid students understanding. From those strategies which have been applied, students more easily understanding the material delivered. The teacher gave motivations to the students to build enthusiasm and enjoy in teaching and learning process. It can be concluded that the goal of teaching English by using those strategies could be achieved. Teaching English to deaf students at SLB Manunggal Slawi focused on reading and writing skill.
